I never thought….

7 Oct

I really never did… I LOVE LOVE LOVE volunteering, and I love learning. However, I’m not a fan of teaching, and I can be… impatient when it comes to children. When you put both together… it sounds like it would be unbearable… This is when you know that I’ve never paid much attention to or set much store in math…. A negative plus a negative IS a negative, but I SHOULD have been multiplying. So far, volunteering at the La Moyne Center with these children is the most rewarding and eye-opening experience I’ve ever had! I actually enjoy it. And I always leave content! I’m exhausted, sure, but it is all worth it. I’ve gotten tiny hugs, a few high-fives, and a lot of smiles from these kids. It’s hard to keep up with them, because they all want your attention, and you want to give them as much of that attention that you can. You also pick out your “favorites.” I don’t want to say I have them, but I do. You just get along better with some more than others (Meg, you’re too right on all of this, and I figured out you were in the first day)! It’s so rewarding when they finish their homework or bring back an A or B on something. Even better, though, is that look they get on their faces when you show how proud you are of them. Nothing is better than that (except when the same little girl asks you to push her on the swings two days in a row, because she trusts that you’ll say, “Yes, of course!”). I never thought that I’d want to keep going back to these kids, or that I would feel this way after three days! I like it, though. 🙂

It sounds like you’re having such a wonderful experience Emily! I’m so glad for you, and I’m even more glad for the children that you’re working with. It sounds like you’re a great mentor and role model for them. Keep up the fantastic work!
